Ex-Labour Party Treasurer Clears Peter Obi of Campaign Fund Misuse Allegations

Lagos, Nigeria – Former National Treasurer of the Labour Party (LP), Oluchi Oparah, has dismissed allegations that the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, misappropriated party funds during his campaign.

In an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, Oparah refuted claims made by LP chieftain Abayomi Arabambi, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.

“Mr. Obi never touched party funds for his campaign,” she declared, adding that Obi not only financed his own campaign but also supported the Labour Party financially during a time of dire need.

According to Oparah, prior to Obi’s entry into the party, the Labour Party was in deep financial distress and unable to meet basic obligations, including the payment of staff salaries. She credited Obi’s financial contributions with helping the party recover and regain operational capacity.

“The Labour Party was heavily indebted before Mr. Obi joined. He fulfilled every financial obligation expected of him and even made personal donations to keep the party afloat,” she explained.

She also clarified that political candidates typically operate independent campaign accounts separate from party finances—an arrangement Obi fully complied with.

“He spent a lot of money on the Labour Party’s programmes—personally funded. The Labour Party didn’t have a dime,” she said.

Oparah also used the opportunity to criticise the current APC-led government, accusing it of lacking transparency and urging the public to direct their scrutiny toward the ruling party rather than attacking Peter Obi.

In response to allegations of misconduct, she issued a challenge:

“Let anyone accusing Mr Obi of financial impropriety come forward with evidence. Show us the account to which you made payments, if any.”

She further described Obi as a lifelong philanthropist, stating that his generosity is not a political stunt but a defining personal characteristic.

“Anyone who knows Mr Obi well knows that his act of charity is like the air he breathes,” she said.
